From going over many tutorials for the iPhone and OS X in general, I see the use of delegates frequently.  Also, the guidelines for certain frameworks, for example, Core Data, require the creation of delegates for certain functions.  

I understand the basic premise of a delegate, from articles and documentation, but I am struggling with the “conventions” which make use of the design pattern.

I can blindly follow the instructions to create them, but don't truly understand their use.

UIPickerView is a very simple view that perfectly demonstrates the delegate (and data source) patterns.
