Instruments: ObjectAlloc Graph and Leaks Pikes

Running my app in the leaks testing env I see that every once and a while I get an orange spike down in the leaks row and my objectAlloc graph keeps getting taller. I took this to mean that I had a serious memory leak and I spent hours trying to determine where it was. Then… I ran an app destributed by apple as a sample and noticed it had the same exact behaviour.

Questions:

1- Do spikes in the leaks row represent a leak that needs to be plugged? (is a leak represented differently than a single spike?)

2- Is an ever increasing objectAlloc graph representative of a normally functioning program?

Thanks
