Should this work?

mySearchBar.keyboardType = UIKeyboardTypeNamePhonePad;

or is the search bar limited to the “main” keyboard?

You can set it to that or any of these

UIKeyboardTypeDefault,
UIKeyboardTypeASCIICapable,
UIKeyboardTypeNumbersAndPunctuation,
UIKeyboardTypeURL,
UIKeyboardTypeNumberPad,
UIKeyboardTypePhonePad,
UIKeyboardTypeNamePhonePad,
UIKeyboardTypeEmailAddress,

yours will work
